Youth Suicide — An Inquiry, A Perspective

The subject of suicide among young people is painful, but it is also a subject we must be willing to discuss openly.

We often hear that a young person took their own life because of failure in an examination, a relationship problem, unemployment, family conflict, financial pressure, loneliness, or some other immediate difficulty.

But perhaps we should look deeper.

A single event may be the immediate trigger, but it is often not the whole story. The World Health Organization notes that suicide has multiple and interacting risk factors, including loss, loneliness, discrimination, relationship difficulties, financial problems, violence, abuse, chronic illness, barriers to care, and previous suicide attempts. Some suicides also occur impulsively during moments of crisis. (World Health Organization)

So the question should not merely be:

“What happened that day?”

We should also ask:

“What had been happening in this person's life for months or years before that day?”

When one setback becomes the whole of life

A young person may fail an examination and begin to think:

“My life is finished.”

Someone may not get a job and think:

“Everyone has moved ahead. I am good for nothing.”

Someone may experience rejection in a relationship and conclude:

“There is no point in living without this person.”

Someone may fall behind their classmates and begin to believe:

“I have lost the race.”

But life is much larger than any one examination, job, relationship, college, city, or social circle.

A setback is an event in life. It is not the definition of life.

This distinction needs to be taught much earlier.

We are sometimes teaching children the wrong definition of success

If children grow up hearing only about marks, ranks, salaries, prestigious colleges, government jobs, social status, appearance, and comparison, they may slowly begin to measure their entire worth through these things.

Then a failure in one area can feel like a failure of the entire person.

We need to give children a broader understanding of life.

Teach them that a meaningful life can include:

learning, physical health, meaningful work, self-reliance, friendship, creativity, helping others, reading, service, courage, truthfulness, and the simple ability to experience joy.

A person's worth is much larger than their examination score or salary.

Give young people more than one reason to wake up

Perhaps one of the most important things we can do is help young people build multiple sources of meaning. If a student has only one goal—say, clearing one examination—and everything else in life has been neglected, failure in that examination can feel catastrophic.

But if that same young person also has books to read, a sport to play, people to help, skills to develop, meaningful work to explore, friendships to build, and questions about life to understand, one setback cannot destroy the entire structure of their life.

A strong life needs more than one pillar. Do not make loneliness a punishment

Young people often experience enormous pressure to “fit in.”

They may feel that everyone else has friends, relationships, social recognition, and a successful life while they are somehow being left behind.

We need to teach them that being alone for a period of life is not the same as being worthless or unwanted.

A person can use periods of solitude to read, learn, exercise, develop skills, work, create something, and understand themselves better.

Good books can become companions. Meaningful work can become a source of connection. Helping someone else can reconnect us with life.

At the same time, we should not romanticize isolation. Supportive relationships and access to appropriate mental-health care are important protective factors. WHO emphasizes the importance of supportive family, school, and community environments for adolescent mental well-being. (World Health Organization)

Listen before giving advice

When a young person says: “I can't take this anymore.”

Don't immediately reply: “Others have bigger problems.”

Don't say: “Be strong.” Don't say: “You are overthinking.”

And certainly don't turn the conversation into a lecture.

First, listen.

Ask what is happening.

Let the person speak without fear of being mocked, judged, or punished.

UNICEF has highlighted that adolescents' difficulties are often dismissed as merely a normal part of growing up, while stigma and lack of awareness can prevent them from seeking help. (UNICEF)

Sometimes the most important thing we can give another person is the feeling:

“I can tell you what is happening to me, and you will not humiliate me for it.”

Asking directly about suicide does not make the problem worse

If you are genuinely concerned that someone may be thinking about suicide, do not avoid the subject because it feels uncomfortable.

Ask calmly and directly whether they are thinking about hurting themselves or ending their life.

Take such statements seriously.

Do not leave a person in immediate danger alone, and involve a trusted person and qualified mental-health or medical support as soon as possible.

Suicidal thoughts and behaviour deserve serious attention; they are not something to dismiss as “drama” or an attempt to attract attention. UNICEF notes that expressions of wanting to hurt or kill oneself in children and adolescents should always be taken seriously. (UNICEF)

Parents have an important responsibility

Parents do not need to provide their children with a perfect life.

They need to provide a relationship in which the child can say:

“I have failed.” “I am scared.” “I don't know what to do.” “I made a mistake.”

“I don't agree with you.”

—and still feel loved and respected.

If children believe that failure will result in humiliation, violence, rejection, or the withdrawal of love, they may hide their difficulties precisely when they most need support.

A home should not be a courtroom where children are constantly being judged.

It should be a place where they can recover and begin again.

Teachers and institutions also have a role

Schools and colleges cannot solve every problem, but they can create an environment where students do not feel that their entire identity depends on academic performance.

Teachers should notice sudden changes in behaviour, prolonged withdrawal, extreme distress, bullying, or other signs that a student may be struggling.

Institutions also need accessible pathways to counselling and professional support.

WHO recommends psychosocial interventions and supportive environments across schools, communities, and other settings as part of adolescent mental-health promotion and suicide prevention. (World Health Organization)

Teach children that life has many chapters

Perhaps this is one of the most important lessons we can give them:

A difficult chapter is not the end of the book.

You may fail an examination.

You may lose a year.

You may not get the job you wanted.

You may discover that your chosen career was not right for you.

You may experience rejection.

You may fall behind your friends.

You may have to start again at an age when others seem far ahead.

None of these things automatically means that life has lost its meaning.

Sometimes the path changes.

Sometimes our expectations change.

Sometimes we become stronger precisely because life did not go according to our original plan.

Give young people a purpose larger than comparison

Instead of constantly asking children:

“What will you become?”

we might also ask:

“What kind of person do you want to become?”

Do you want to become honest?

Capable?

Self-reliant?

Courageous?

Compassionate?

Excellent at your work?

Useful to other people?

Someone who makes the environment around them better?

These questions give life a larger horizon.

If a young person develops the desire to learn, work, contribute, and live with dignity, then even when one path closes, there are still many other paths worth exploring.

And perhaps we need to change our definition of failure

Failure is not necessarily losing an examination, missing a job, or falling behind someone else.

Sometimes the greater failure is giving up the opportunity to learn from the present situation.

If something has gone wrong, ask:

What can I learn?

What can I change?

What is still in my hands?

What useful work can I do today?

These questions bring the mind back from an imagined hopeless future to the possibilities of the present.

And that is important because suicide is preventable. WHO and UNICEF emphasize that timely support, evidence-based interventions, supportive environments, and better access to care can make a difference. (World Health Organization)

A final thought

We should not tell a struggling young person merely:

“Your life is precious.”

We should also help them discover why life can become precious again.

Give them books.

Give them meaningful work.

Give them opportunities to learn.

Give them physical activity.

Give them people who listen.

Give them room to fail without humiliation.

Give them opportunities to help someone else.

Give them the freedom to change direction.

And when they are in serious distress, give them professional help rather than expecting them to solve everything through willpower alone.

A young person's life should not be judged by how quickly they reached a particular destination.

Sometimes the most important achievement is simply finding enough support and clarity to continue the journey.

The purpose of education should not be merely to prepare a young person to earn a living, but also to prepare them to understand life, face difficulty, think independently, and live with dignity.

For your book, I would recommend keeping this chapter non-judgmental and evidence-based, especially avoiding language that portrays suicide as cowardice, selfishness, or a moral failure. That framing can increase stigma and make help-seeking harder. Recent UNICEF India work has specifically identified stigma as a major barrier to young people accessing mental-health support.

The 10X Rule by Grant Cardone : Book Review Cum Intro (Gunjan Samant)

Book Review: The 10X Rule by Grant Cardone Stop Surviving, Start Thriving But Don’t Forget You’re Human

Every new year begins with fresh energy and fresh promises. We tell ourselves, this year will be different. Yet we also laugh at how resolutions rarely survive beyond January. That contradiction makes you pause—are we afraid of disappointing others?, or are we quietly breaking promises to ourselves? Are we entering a new year with new goals, but the same old mindset?

That question is what led me to The 10X Rule by Grant Cardone. I came across this book through a workshop recommendation. Before reading it, I was curious but skeptical. My first reaction was genuine surprise. The book is bold, intense, and unapologetically demanding. It energizes you—but it can also feel overwhelming. With time, though, I realized something important: a book should be used, not obeyed. And The 10X Rule is no exception.

At its core, the book argues that people don’t fail because they lack talent or intelligence, but because they massively underestimate the amount of action required for success in particular task or objective. Cardone repeatedly points to the gap between intention and execution—the space where most dreams quietly fade. He urges readers to stop operating in survival mode and instead aim for abundance through massive action.

In his framework, success isn’t luxury; it’s freedom and security—the ability to choose. One of the most practical ideas in the book is the concept of the four degrees of action: doing nothing, retreating, taking normal action, or taking massive action. As a student, this resonated deeply with me. I could see my own struggles with consistency, fear of failure, and even overworking reflected here. The exercises at the end of each chapter also encourage pause and reflection, making the book more interactive than purely motivational.

But this is also where my critical engagement begins. The book often assumes that everything can be controlled if you try hard enough. While I value its emphasis on responsibility, it sometimes overlooks very real human limits—emotional fatigue, burnout, and the need for rest. Obsession is framed as a gift rather than a disease. I agree to an extent, but obsession without boundaries can quietly become harmful. For me, rest is not laziness. It is guilt-free, productive rest—taking time to breathe, reflect, acknowledge small wins, and recognize how far you’ve come.

Reflection isn’t slowing down; it’s recalibration. A more humane 10X mindset would normalize emotional disruption instead of dismissing it. A simple example is competitive exam preparation. Many students, especially in classes 11 and 12, begin with extreme intensity. They go all in without understanding what truly deserves priority. Without clarity, effort becomes exhausting instead of empowering.

"Action matters—but direction matters just as much."

Where the book truly shines is in how it reframes fear as a sign of growth and failure as feedback. I personally connect with this. Failure, for me, has never been something to feel guilty about—it’s information. Still, not every reader may have the self-awareness to filter the book’s intensity in a healthy way.

That’s why The 10X Rule works best for beginners and highly ambitious individuals—but it may overwhelm those who struggle with self-compassion. I would recommend it with awareness. "Don’t follow it blindly". Let it support you, not pressure you.

If a book leaves you more drained than directed, something isn’t right. What we can control is our effort, mindset, and response. What we cannot control is life itself. Not every outcome bends to hard work, and acceptance doesn’t mean giving up—it means continuing without breaking yourself.

In the end, The 10X Rule isn’t a secret formula. It’s a lens. Used wisely, it can be powerful. Used rigidly, it can be exhausting. For me, "success is incomplete without sustainability". "Thriving should never come at the cost of being human"

Books like The 10X Rule push you to act. But before acting harder—pause. Who are you when you push like this? What drives you? What drains you? What does success mean to you? Maybe the next step isn’t more intensity, but more consciousness.

Do let me know your feedback/reflections.

Reading, Understanding & Excel.

Best Wishes

Editorial Comments by Lovekush Kumar:

  • Our promise to accomplish some work has strength in the fact of the actual necessity of the work and our mindset towards the work.

  • Understand the difference between obsession and passion (or understanding the need) and align to more inclusice and actual need based choice.

  • Emotional disruption may be caused by valuing other’s opinion whose work and priorities are completely different, who doesn’t understand importance and need of our works (Center of our priorities)

  • Instead of controlling life one may try to set one’s priorities based on one’s actual need, like freedom from greed fear and illusions, self dependence and excellence in works and life with a healthy body, time for sports, time for reading good books, time to travel to explore and understand our surrounding, our nature.

  • In short “center or intention behind our decisions and priorities matters the most”

She completed her schooling at Don Bosco Senior Secondary School, Pithoragarh, where her years as a student shaped not only academic discipline but also a growing curiosity about life itself. Early on, she became aware that "education does more than build careers—it quietly shapes how we think, feel, and understand the world around us."

  • Gunjan believes that as young people who will soon become adults, it is important to reflect deeply and grow consciously—so that when younger minds seek guidance, they are met with empathy, clarity, and realism rather than confusion or unrealistic ideals.

Through her writing, she invites readers to slow down and sit with themselves. She views life as a series of seasons, each carrying its own lessons, and believes that nothing goes in vain—not struggle, not grief, not pauses.

  • Her work explores quieter, often unspoken emotions and encourages acknowledging them rather than suppressing them, reminding readers that "understanding what we feel is not weakness, but the beginning of living with awareness and purpose".
